Roles and Responsibilities of LAFC - Introduction



This webpage is intended to address some of the issues raised regarding the roles and responsibilities for the Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner (LAFC) as defined by the Fire Services Act, and their implications for the OFC, the LAFC and the fire service. The Local Assistant represents the Fire Commissioner at the local government level. Once an LAFC is appointed, the LAFC must perform all the legislated duties as outlined in the Fire Services Act, which include:

Because an LAFC carries the authorities of a peace officer in a manner that is conferred by the Fire Services Act, the Fire Commissioner takes the appointments of LAFC very seriously and references the content on this webpage for the appointments. The Fire Commissioner urges all fire chiefs to read and understand this information prior to authorizing someone as a Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner.
