Fire Safety Inspections

The fundamental reason for conducting fire inspections is to reduce the risk of life and property losses from fire, by identifying and causing the correction of those conditions which contribute to the occurrence and spread of fire. Fire prevention inspections are one of the most important non-fire fighting activities performed by the fire service.

There are legislation in both the Fire Services Act and the BC Fire Code that regulates fire safety inspection.

Where the LAFC is responsible for fire safety inspections in their jurisdiction, the primary role is to establish the following for a fire safety inspection program:

Where there are items that require the owner’s attention, the owner should be given a reasonable amount of time to correct the situation. The LAFC may notify the owner of these items in the most effective way in their local jurisdiction by means of an inspection report or a letter to owner. Some fire safety inspection may result in a provincial fire order.
